Students justify all design decisions using data science ideas developed on Days 1 through 3. Students create their apparatus - circuit, spacecraft, and test hardware box based on criteria, constraints, and tradeoffs. Students work on the design phase of their model’s three components: the circuit (an electromagnetic switch), the spacecraft, and the test hardware box. Students create circuits and electromagnets. Students explore the science ideas involved in designing the circuit control and drop tower - circuits (series and parallel), electromagnets, and schematic diagram. DownloadĭAY 3: Design a Drop Tower to Test Spacecraft Capsules Students use these ideas to further define the criteria and constraints of the design problem. Students investigate how an impact graph changes when objects with different masses are dropped from different heights. DownloadĭAY 2: Reduce Force Applied on a Spacecraft on Impact with Earth
Students are introduced to the design problem: create a large-scale drop tower and spacecraft capsule, capable of transporting an entire crew (six people) back to Earth.

Triumph school leaders are supportive of this project, and every now and then a dean or principal enjoys going up in the bucket to drop the projects. If they are excited about a science lesson, or any lesson, they are more likely to remember what they learned.” We also tend to remember things that are tied to our emotions. “Making science fun and teaching them that it is all around us increases the chance that they will begin to see it in their daily experiences. “It is important to engage students in fun activities that teach scientific concepts because some students see science as difficult or just things that happen in a laboratory,” said Eby.
The purpose of the Egg Drop is so students get practical experience with scientific concepts such as gravity, density, kinetic and potential energy, inertia, velocity, technological design, critical thinking, and problem solving. Egg-stra! Egg-stra! Read all about it! On May 20 fifth- and sixth-grade students at Triumph Academy participated in the school’s annual egg drop.
